For Lely Industries N.V., a dairy farming innovator, a roadmap was created to inspire the company towards a circular dairy farm in 2035. Currently, animal agriculture is the biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions. Continuing in the same way as is done today was found to be impossible.
Extensive research was done to find trends in the dairy industry, emerging technologies, the economy and other fields. The investigation of the flow of bio and technological nutrients revealed that the currently wasted nutrients, when manipulated, could be used as source nutrients for the processes on the farm. Suggestions for methods to turn waste nutrients into source nutrients were presented to Lely Industries. These methods included biodigesters and algae being used as biomass.
